Le Marchesine (Lombardia) at A16 Napa

When we think of Lombardia, we think of Franciacorta and of Cantina Le Marchesine, a small and innovative wine estate that is one of the most prestigious in its league in the Lombardy region.

The excellent Franciacorta producing job is something the Biatta family passes on from one generation to the next. Giovanni Biatta, the forefather of “Le Marchesine”, acquired in 1985 the first three hectares in the Franciacorta area.

For at least five generations, the family has nurtured its one and only true passion: wine excellence.

Under the expert guidance of his father Giovanni, Loris Biatta with his children Alice and Andrea, now take care of the vineyard and the cellar. From its initial three hectares, the company vineyard has extended reaching 47 hectares, registered in the DOC and DOCG lists.

Ciro Biondi (Sicilia) at A16 Rockridge

Ciro Biondi (Sicilia) at A16 Rockridge

On Sunday, October 19, we are excited to welcome Cantina 𝐂𝐢𝐫𝐨 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐢 to A16 Rockridge for an evening of Sicilian flavors from the slopes of Mount Etna.

Vintner Ciro Biondi will be on site to share stories and insights of the family estate.

Ciro Biondi’s family has owned vineyards on the southern side of Mt. Etna since at least 1800, and first sold bottled wine under their label a century ago. Ciro, an architect by training, and his wife Stef began their wine making journey in 1999, cultivating three vineyards near the small town of Trecastagni, using the family’s old stone palmento. The steep terraces that make up each of Ciro’s three vineyards are iconic. Immediately you have a sense you’ve been here before, but of course it’s only through images you’ve stumbled upon in years past. Like most of Etna the black volcanic soil is evident, falling through your hands like sand when you pick it up. Toward the very top of the steep terraces the soil and rocks turn a Mars-like red. Ciro’s discovered the need to limit his input into the winemaking decisions and do everything he can to let the place speak as honestly as possible, with the very lightest touch. As Ciro reminds us, nature is so much more powerful than he is; his best work over the years has come from recognizing that truth.

Biondi’s cellar and three single vineyards are on the south-east slope of Etna. Despite the regions of Passopisciaro and Terre Nere in the North garnering a bit more attention, historically the south side was better known than the north. South Etna tends to produce wines that are more subtle, more Pinot-like, than its Northern counterparts, and are often paler in color. The microclimate, unique to the foothills of this region of Etna, coupled with the diversity of its sandy, mineral-rich volcanic soil make Biondi’s wines a compelling contribution to one of the most intriguing wine regions of Italy - if not the world.

Graci (Etna) at A16 Rockridge
Aug

Graci (Etna) at A16 Rockridge

Sicily has a colorful yet mysterious reputation, a land of vast diversity and contradiction. In no category is this more perfectly represented than by wine, with the inky, robust wines of western Sicily contrasting with the oxidized white wines of Marsala, the fruity, ripe wines of Vittoria in the southeast, and finally the ethereal, unique wines originating from the live volcano that looms over Catania on the eastern shore. Graci, situated on the north slope of Mount Etna at Passopisciaro, is found in an area where viticulture dates back several thousand years. Their vineyards sit at an altitude between 600 and 1,000 meters above sea level. Planting density ranges from 6,000 to 10,000 vines per hectare. Many of the vines are still on original rootstock, ungrafted, having never been affected by the phylloxera scourge thanks to the unique nature of the volcanic soils.
At Graci, young Alberto Aiello Graci remains steadfast in his respect for local traditions as well as the distinct nature of each vintage and only cultivates traditional varieties indigenous to Mount Etna: the red grapes Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio, and white grapes Carricante and Catarratto. Intervention of any kind is extremely limited, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. They do not use herbicides in order to preserve the unique balance and vital energy of the soil. They do not use barriques, but only the big, upright, wooden casks known as tini and large, well-used wood barrels. Their sole objective is to reflect the personalities of their vineyards and the sublime differences between each and every harvest.

Graci (Etna) at A16 Napa
